March is National Social Work Month!

A Collage of Social Workers at BronxWorks
Just a few of the dozens of social workers at BronxWorks!

March is National Social Work Month, and March 15 is National Social Work Day!

We at BronxWorks are grateful to our Social Workers for the integral role they play in our Bronx Community and advancing our mission alongside all of our dedicated staff to improve the economic and social well-being of our Bronx neighbors.

Social workers have been an integral part of our nation for decades. Social workers played key roles in the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights movements and pushed for social programs we now take for granted, including the minimum wage, a 40-hour work week, Social Security and Medicare. Throughout U.S. history, social workers have:

  • Fought for civil and voting rights for people of color
  • Protested American intervention in wars
  • Achieved the minimum wage and safer workplaces for poor people
  • Expanded reproductive and employment rights for American women
  • Supported marriage and employment protections for LGBT people
  • Advocated for immigrants seeking asylum
  • Pushed for sensible gun laws and anti-violence initiatives
  • Raised awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment
  • Fought for client privacy and mental health services

The time is always right for social work, however, it is especially true now as our nation continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, systemic racism, economic inequality, global warming, and other crises.

#JustPay Rally at City Hall

A group of BronxWorks staff hold signs saying #JustPay and Fund the Frontlines

On Thursday, March 10, dozens of BronxWorks staff from across the agency participated in a rally to support the #JustPay campaign, which looks to end chronically low wages for human services workers.

The New York State human services workforce is 800,000+ workers strong, most of whom make about 71% of what government employees and 82% of what private sector workers receive for the same role.

Thousands of nonprofit human services workers from organizations across the five boroughs filled Park Row outside City Hall, calling on the mayor and city council to put into law fair pay and contracts for human services organizations.

#JustPay looks to implement change by focusing on three core reforms:

  • enforcement of an annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA)
  • a living wage floor of $21 an hour
  • addition of a comprehensive wage and benefit schedule for all City- and State-funded human services workers.

If you are interested in supporting the nonprofit human services sector and the #JustPay campaign, you can sign the supporter sign-on form here.
