July 27, 2021 – NYC Health + Hospitals and BronxWorks celebrated two years of NYC Care at the Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center on July 27.

NYC Care is the City’s health care access program for those who can not afford or otherwise access health care. All NYC Care services are provided through NYC Health + Hospitals. BronxWorks is one of 30 community-based organizations and one of four in the Bronx who work with NYC Health + Hospitals to enroll new members in this program.

BronxWorks Executive Director Eileen Torres welcomed and addressed the crowd.

Since its inception, BronxWorks has been a staunch supporter and advocate of NYC Care. We are thrilled to be a part of this major enrollment milestone and will continue to work to ensure that all of our community members understand their options and have access to affordable, quality health care.”

City Council Member Vanessa Gibson Speaking at NYC Care 2-Year Anniversary Event

City Council Member Vanessa Gibson (D-16th District) also spoke, saying, “There is nothing more important than our health and well-being, and many of us have been traumatized by COVID. It is so important, especially in communities of color and immigrant communities, we can not lose sight of the importance of our work to stay safe and to be healthy. We have to be committed to this work.” Council Member Gibson also stressed the importance of getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Also speaking were NYC Care Executive Director Marielle Kress, NYC Care Director of Community Partnerships Dr. Jonathan Jimenez, BronxWorks NYC Care Program Coordinator Tahmina Akter, and NYC Care Outreach Worker at Emerald Isle Immigration Center Liliana Estrella.

The anniversary event provided information to the public on how to enroll in NYC Care, with outreach workers walking the streets across New York City throughout the day. At the Community Center, attendees were provided with information about other BronxWorks programs, a COVID-19 Vaccine mobile van, and a food pantry. BronxWorks has worked with NYC Care since its inception, and, due in part to our efforts, NYC Care has provided over 80,000 New Yorkers with affordable health care.
