Seniors Homelessness Prevention Project

The BronxWorks Senior Homelessness Prevention Project (SHPP) helps low-income Bronx residents aged 60 years or older avoid eviction. The program is the only one of its kind in New York City.

SHPP housing specialists work with seniors who have active cases against them in Bronx Housing Court, helping them avoid eviction in both the short term and long term. We assist seniors in navigating housing court, securing funds to pay back rent, identifying eligibility for benefits, and accessing budget counseling in order to address multiple barriers to continued independent living.

SHPP’s first priority is helping seniors maintain their current apartment and avoid eviction.

Click here to read the Senior Homelessness Prevention Program Policy Paper, which recommends that New York City expand the SHPP model into all five boroughs.

This program was made possible in part by a grant from The New York Bar Foundation.

BronxWorks has been great. The service we get here has been wonderful, they don’t look down on you here. People here understand, you’re going to run into hard times, and let’s see if we can find a way of working with you so you don’t have to run into this again. When I came into BronxWorks, a whole new world opened for me.”
