When temperatures drop below freezing, the New York City Department of Homeless Services calls a Code Blue. Should you see anyone at risk, especially a homeless individual, please call 311. The BronxWorks Homeless Outreach Team will be dispatched to offer assistance.

BronxWorks food pantries operate on a client-choice model, allowing individuals to select the items they prefer. Distribution is based on family size to ensure appropriate support. We are appointment-based, and all clients must call the hotline (646.596.1316) on the designated call day to schedule an appointment. Appointments are issued on a first-call, first-served basis. Please note that some sites have limited availability, so we strongly recommend calling early, as appointments fill up quickly. Click here for a full list of BronxWorks pantry sites.

Services for Older Adults FAQs

What kinds of benefits or entitlements could I potentially qualify for?

You may qualify and apply for food stamps, Medicaid, HEAP, SCRIE, DRIE, LIFELINE, SAFE LINK, Access-a-Ride, EPIC, and the Medicare Savings Program. We also have a free tax assistance program that operates during the tax preparation season (January through April of each year).

I need housing assistance. What kinds of housing assistance do you offer? Can you find me an apartment?

The BronxWorks’ Senior Housing Assistance Program case manager can assist you with filling out housing applications, provide tenant landlord advocacy, and help you apply for SCRIE or DRIE. The case manager can also give you information on your housing rights and provide you with a listing of senior housing complexes. However, BronxWorks does not rent apartments.

I need my smoke detector battery changed and I cannot reach it. Can you help me with this?

Yes, our Minor Repair Program coordinates with technicians who can come to your home and change the battery on your smoke detector.

My grandchild moved in with me and is stealing all my money. What can I do?

This is abuse. A case manager with our Elder Abuse Program will make a home visit to discuss a plan of action with you. If you do not have money for food, the case manager will bring you a food bag from our pantry.

I am seeking mental health support but I do not know where to turn. Can Older Adult Centers provide support?

BronxWorks can provide screening and connection to care through the NYC Geriatric Mental Health Initiative at all our Older Adult Centers, Naturally Occurring Retirement Centers (NORCs), and Social Club. We can screen for depression, anxiety and substance abuse.
