Jailyn M.

Jailyn M. graduated from Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School this year. She will attend Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA in the fall where she will study Biochemistry. Jailyn hopes to start a career in echocardiography. “I knew a few years ago I wanted to pursue medicine,” she says, “The career of an echo-technician can be financially rewarding. I wanted to get into the career as soon as possible so I put in the extra work and I am graduating a year earlier than most students!”

Jailyn joined the BronxWorks CAFE Program last Fall after hearing about the program through a counselor at her night school. “The program is really amazing,” she says. “Being a senior is hard, and with the extra work I was putting in to graduate early, the encouragement from the BronxWorks staff was enormously helpful.” Jailyn says the BronxWorks CAFE Program provided her guidance when choosing colleges, weighing pros and cons of the different schools she had looked at and working with her to support her goals. “Old Dominion had a really great internship program in echo tech; that made the decision easy, and I was so excited I was accepted.”

Jailyn lives with her mom and two little brothers. Education is important in their home, with her mom currently working on her Master’s degree and her aunt already with a Master’s. “My extended family live here in the Bronx and in New Jersey, and while they are nervous about how far away I will be going to school, everyone has been incredibly supportive of me and excited for my education.”

Emmanuel A.

Emmanuel A. was born here in New York City but moved to Ghana when he was very little. After spending most of his childhood in Ghana, he returned to the Bronx two years ago and found the BronxWorks CAFE Program. He participated in multiple workshops about the college application process and what to expect from college life, as well as SAT prep classes. He feels these workshops have prepared him for higher education. “Coming to America, I didn’t know a lot about how the process worked. CAFE definitely helped me understand the process. The workshops were an eye opener, not just about college education and FAFSA, but also maintaining mental health. It was really educational for me.”

Emmanuel graduated from Bronx Community High School in December 2023 and is preparing to attend New York University in the fall to study Computer Science and Finance. “I really like technology; coding is something I’ve come to like a lot. I want to be a software engineer. There’s many branches of tech, but I want to be on the back end of software development.”

With CAFE’s guidance, Emmanuel applied for and received an NYU scholarship for full tuition, as well as other smaller scholarships. “Going to a big school like NYU was important. Big schools have access to a wide array of great internships, and I am so excited to be attending the school. My family is really excited and everybody is proud.”

BronxWorks Celebrates Pride Month

BronxWorks staff celebrated Pride Month with Spirit Days, where they were encouraged to wear bright colors from any pride flag.

Throughout the month of June, BronxWorks programs celebrated Pride Month and showed support for the LGBTQ+ community. BronxWorks is a large organization with very diverse staff and participants, and Pride Month is an important time to come together and stand with those in the community, learn from their experiences, and support their efforts for acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights and identities.

Pride Month was celebrated across the agency through a variety of programming and borough-wide events. Members of the BronxWorks LGBTQ+ Committee, BronxWorks Positive Living Program, and other BronxWorks staff attended Da Bronx Pride Festival, hosted by Destination Tomorrow. Positive Living hosted a table at the event to provide information about the program and offered free and confidential on-site HIV and Hepatitis testing. Positive Living also provided free HIV testing at Walgreens on National HIV Testing Day once again this year.

Jobs Plus held a LGBTQ+ Career and College Fair to help queer job seekers obtain the skills and network needed to boost their career. CAFE staff were also present to support attendees with the search for higher education opportunities that align with their career goals. Jobs Plus aims to have members of the LGBTQ+ community represented in all careers, and in all levels of leadership across all industries.

At Cooper Gardens Supportive Housing, residents celebrated Pride Month with an event for children and families that offered activities centered around LGBTQ+ visibility and knowledge. Staff and participants also painted different pride flags and other designs with lots of colors.

Jamilla Staine Pyne, Tenant Services Coordinator at Cooper Gardens, said the celebration and visibility of LGBTQ+ identities is critical in a supportive housing environment where people from all walks of life are living together. “LGBTQ+ communities have higher than average rates of housing instability, substance abuse, and domestic violence, all of which are issues that can come up in this environment when we meet with clients,” said Jamilla. “We want to be irrevocably clear that BronxWorks is here to help. People in the LGBTQ+ community have a safe place at BronxWorks.”

Milton Webster, Program Coordinator, Learn & Earn Program

Headshot picture of Milton Webster in his classroom

Milton Webster, Program Coordinator for the BronxWorks Learn and Earn Program at Frederick Douglass Academy III, has worked with students since he was a student himself in high school. Milton grew up in Harlem, where he coincidentally attended Frederick Douglass Academy I and eventually graduated high school from Frederick Douglass Academy II. While in high school, Milton started working at Harlem Children’s Zone, where his passion for working with students began. Milton continued to work at Harlem Children’s Zone for over a decade, while he graduated high school and attended Syracuse University before transferring to the University of Bridgeport to study Business Administration.

Milton originally wanted to be a gym teacher and worked with youth basketball teams in Harlem, until he realized his true passion for nurturing students as a whole. Milton says his time in after-school programs as a youth made him passionate about providing that kind of support to other children.

“Growing up in after-school settings, I’ve seen both sides, being a participant and a staff member, so I know exactly what to do in certain situations.

Milton joined the BronxWorks Learn and Earn Program at Frederick Douglass Academy III as a Youth Worker in 2018, before quickly being promoted to Case Manager. In November of 2021, he became the Program Coordinator for the BronxWorks Learn and Earn Program, and now leads programming for dozens of juniors and seniors to prepare them for life after high school. The Learn and Earn Program provides activities and workshops to help students learn more about the careers and colleges they are interested in pursuing. The program also continues to support participants for a year after they graduate high school.

I’m really proud to say I’ve gotten a lot of kids to go to college. Yes, they can have it in their minds to go, but when they come to our program, we really instill in them that we want them to have either a job or attend college right after high school. And we can say like 80-85% of our students have a job or are attending college after they graduate.”

Milton says his ultimate goal is to run his own nonprofit of after-school programming for students in his community. In his free time, Milton enjoys music and works as a DJ throughout the city, and he also enjoys watching anime.

Matthew Henry speaks at the BronxWorks 2024 Lifting Lives Gala.

Matthew Henry is a soon-to-be high school graduate and has been both a participant and a Youth Worker with BronxWorks. He currently attends Bronx Legacy High School, where he will graduate in June as Valedictorian. Matthew is also a recent graduate of the BronxWorks Work Learn and Grow employment program, which has helped him prepare for the next steps in his life after high school.

“The program was basically trying to teach me different life lessons [that will help me] get into the workforce when I grow older. It was a very important lesson for me since I’m 17, turning 18 in June.”

Through the BronxWorks Work Learn and Grow program, Matthew was connected to the BronxWorks Community Health Programs as an intern, and he was then hired to be a Youth Worker. Matthew worked with our intergenerational programming, where he facilitated cultural cooking classes, nutrition education classes, and technology classes for Bronx children and older adults. BronxWorks intergenerational programming works to create deeper cross-generational bonds to strengthen our community. While teaching these classes, Matthew has been able to make lasting connections with his Bronx neighbors.

“It was a lot of work, but it was fun. The seniors have amazing discussions with me and the kids. The kids, they’re amazing. They’re so smart and they’re so educated. I’m so proud to say that they are the new generation. These experiences that I’ve been through, it really helped me to shape into the type of person that I want to become.”

Because of his accomplishments, we proudly welcomed Matthew to speak at the BronxWorks 2024 Lifting Lives Gala about his experiences with BronxWorks. In the fall, Matthew will be attending Syracuse University to study Aerospace Engineering. In his free time, he loves to read sci-fi and fantasy books.

John Weed, Senior Vice President

John Weed started at BronxWorks in 1989 as an intern. He grew up in Queens and spent his college years in New Mexico. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico. After graduating, John joined the Peace Corps and spent two-and-a-half years in the Dominican Republic.

My Peace Corps experience was first and foremost lifechanging for me. I learned a language, learned a new culture. I was a volunteer alone in a small town and I loved every moment of it.”

-John Weed, Assistant Executive Director

After he came to the U.S., John taught a bilingual program in California for eight months before moving back to New York City and enrolling at the Hunter College School of Social Work. He came across the BronxWorks (then CAB) Immigration program and recalls meeting his former colleague and fellow Assistant Executive Director, Scott Auwarter, and asking him about the organization.

It was because of Scott that I decided it was a good internship for me. Picture this: the agency was so small at the time, we only had the 2070 Grand Concourse office and two others.”

John stayed at BronxWorks full-time after graduating with his Master’s in Social Work. He helped run the Avenue St. John walk-in office, adding needed programs for the community such as a family childcare network, after-school and youth programming, and more. During his 34 years at BronxWorks, John has worked as a Program Director, Department Director, and, of course, Assistant Executive Director, overseeing all of the community programs at BronxWorks.

What we were able to do at Avenue St. John thrilled me. The community was tiny and there was a lot of devastation in the Bronx when I started. It looks a lot different now than back then, and we were able to make this community work through a variety of programs. I would say my professional accomplishment is to fill a need where it is and work with the community to do that.”

Outside of work, John loves to hike. He’s looking forward to a once-a-year hiking trip with his Peace Corps friends in the Adirondacks. He also loves to garden and travel, and he enjoys spending time with his family and adult children.

(Edited April 2026) John is now the Senior Vice President at BronxWorks.

Marie Edwards, Associate Vice President of Workforce Development

Marie Edwards headshot on blue background.
Marie Edwards began her professional social service career at BronxWorks in 1995.  During her tenure, Marie held positions in a variety of BronxWorks programs and departments, including Homelessness Prevention and Senior Services. After working within many of the Agency’s programs, Marie appreciates the breadth of social services BronxWorks provides. “Our holistic approach makes us more aware of the participant with a broad range of challenges and needs that interconnect with the services at BronxWorks,” Marie said.
Marie served as Program Director of Jobs-Plus for several years. In addition to providing program leadership and oversight, Marie makes an effort to speak with the program’s members, many of whom she knows on a first name basis.
“I get to know our members and even ask about their families. It speaks volumes and lets them know I care,” Marie said. “Moral support goes a long way. Sometimes we are the only support system available to our members,” she added.
Marie has witnessed first-hand the impact the program has had for many members moving toward economic self-sufficiency. One particularly memorable Jobs-Plus member for Marie is Tawan. When Tawan joined the program, she held a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting but had very little work experience and described herself as “severely lacking motivation.” With support from Marie and the Jobs-Plus staff, Tawan excelled in Jobs-Plus. Years later, she is currently working for New York City Department of Homeless Services. Tawan serves as an ambassador of Jobs-Plus and has spoken at many of the program’s workshops. She has even addressed a BronxWorks Board of Directors meeting. Click here to hear more about Tawan.
In addition to her employment experience, Marie has a strong academic background. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health Education and Master’s degree in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York. Marie also holds a Master’s degree in Health Administration from Hofstra University. She is frequently invited to speak on panels regarding homelessness prevention and workforce development.
When asked about the success of Jobs-Plus, Marie mentions its diverse partnerships. “Building strong partnerships is a success not only for the program and the Department, but BronxWorks as a whole. We have partnerships with various employers, training institutions, colleges, and financial institutions,” she said.
As she builds relationships, Marie keeps Jobs-Plus members in mind.
“I want to make sure the needs of who we serve are truly represented,” she said. “BronxWorks continues to be an unwavering voice in our effort to help Bronx residents improve their quality of life.”
(Edited in April 2026) Marie is now the Associate Vice President of Workforce Development at BronxWorks.
