2017 Dip Against Homelessness 

February 11th, a group of winter swimming professionals, amateurs and Polar Bears gathered at Orchard Beach in the Bronx for something special: to participate in the 2017 Dip Against Homelessness event co-organized by BronxNet and BronxWorks.

BronxWorks is now hosting no-charge tax preparation services, including free e-filing, at two locations.

Our Morris Innovative Senior Center (80 E. 181st St.) offers tax assistance from our partners at the Food Bank for New York City.  It is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 12pm to 7pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 4pm.  The phone number is (718) 933-5300.

Families with dependent children can come in anytime between now and April 18.  Single taxpayers may come beginning March 1.

The BronxWorks Family would like to extend our gratitude to Olympian Brett Fraser, and the staff of Imagine School Of Swimming for conducting a Water Safety Clinic at the BronxWorks Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center to roughly 20 BronxWorks children over the weekend. Before hitting the pool, the kids learned some of the basics of the water, like how to float and how to escape a rip current.

On Wednesday, February 3, 2016, BronxWorks, together with Triborough Preservation, a partnership of L+M Development Partners, Preservation Development Partners, and NYCHA, announced the opening of BronxWorks at Bronxchester Houses. The new office offers comprehensive and holistic services to children, young adults, families and seniors with the goal of improving the socio-economic conditions of the Bronxchester community.

BronxWorks is honored to have been featured in the Heart Gallery NYC's inaugural "Through the Eyes of the Homeless"exhibition. Held on Monday, November 16th at the Prince George Ballroom, the exhibit featured photography from three BronxWorks clients - Carl, Dionne, and Michael - who formed part of a cohort of 14 mentee artists from across the city.

The BronxWorks Blue Waves Swim Team was thrilled to host Olympic Swimmer and Gold Medal winner, Anthony Ervin and members of Imagine Swimming for a special clinic at the BronxWorks Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center, located at 1130 Grand Concourse, on Sunday, December 20th, 2015. Imagine Swimming is an organization that provides swimming lessons to children and advocates for the sport.

On Christmas Eve, the Hance Family Foundation came to the BronxWorks Classic Cornerstone Community Center for a special Christmas Event.  More than  250 BronxWorks children from the Betances, Classic , and  St. Mary’s Cornerstone Community Centers  as well as children from the Jackson Avenue Family Residence joined the holiday festivities.

As 2015 comes to a close, please consider supporting BronxWorks as you plan your year-end donations.  Your generosity will directly benefit programs that assist working age adults to find employment. BronxWorks employment programs include youth career education programs, job skills training and placement services, internship programs, and workforce assistance specifically tailored to struggling parents. BronxWorks also offers employment assistance to individuals that reside in our shelters.

On November 24th ,  the community came out to celebrate  with Willie Colon, from the New York Jets,  and his family, as he returned  to Melrose Houses before Thanksgiving!  150+ Turkeys were provided by Stop and Shop and distributed to people of Melrose. Participants were also treated to breakfast by Pelham Bay Diner and served by the family and friends of Willie Colon.

On Tuesday November 17th, BronxWorks hosted a special pre-Thanksgiving dinner for the BronxWorks Families! Special thanks to The Garden of Dreams Foundation, the New York Rangers, NYC Department of Homeless Services, and our staff who worked tirelessly to make this happen. 273 BronxWorks Families were treated to an early Thanksgiving dinner at the Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center, served by The New York Ranger players, Ryan McDonagh, Dominic Moore and Emerson Etem. The players happily played games, took photos and signed autographs.

BronxWorks was extremely honored to host Arlene Alda for a special visit at our flagship location, the Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center (CMCC).  Located at 1130 Grand Concourse, the CMCC is home to many BronxWorks programs and services, as well as a commercial kitchen, basketball court, gym, rooftop garden and play space as well as the BronxWorks indoor pool.

This month, BronxWorks is partnering with teacher education leader Bank Street College of Education to launch the Quality for All teacher education pilot program.  Held at BronxWorks’ Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center at 1130 Grand Concourse, Quality for All will prepare and develop a cohort of 17 highly effective early childhood teachers to teach in Pre-K classrooms in economically disadvantaged communities in the Bronx.  BronxWorks and Bank Street will also collaborate with local Pre-K programs

BronxWorks kicked off 2015 by committing to a focus on health, nutrition, and wellness in the borough: an imperative no better expressed than in our new Health Committee. Founded in February 2015 by Community Health Programs Director Kim Wong and Assistant Department Director of Supportive Housing and Health Policy Megan Fogarty, the committee seeks to coordinate existing health programming within BronxWorks and create integrated, collaborative health programming.

The Steppers performed along with more than 80 teams comprising 1,000 youth in several rounds of competition and were selected based on both their community service and their dance performances. Final Showcase on June 20th at Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater, where they were crowned citywide champions in the Junior Division. Months of hard work, preparation, and dedication paid off for the BronxWorks Classic Steppers at the DYCD Step It Up!

BronxWorks is proud to announce that the GrowNYC Fresh Food Box program will once again be available at the Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center (CMCC), 1130 Grand Concourse.  The low-cost ($12) produce distribution program will begin on Wednesday, July 15th!  Sign-ups will begin on July 8th and the program will run each week from 3:30 pm-6:30 pm through November 25, 2015.

Raised in the Bronx and now dedicating her career to serving her community, BronxWorks staff member Yinia Ramirez has been nominated for the Hispanic Coalition of New York’s #40Under40 #RisingStars award.  Currently Program Director of BronxWorks’ Navigator Health Insurance Assistance Program, Yinia has served BronxWorks in a wide range of capacities, exhibiting innovative leadership and commitment to collaboratively work with Bronx residents in need to build prosperous futures.

BronxWorks will receive a $5,000 grant from the Youth & Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) as a result of research on our organization undertaken by a team of students from New World High School this past winter.  The project began with a viewing of the BronxWorks website and culminated with an April presentation that featured a video created by the students.  It explored homelessness and income supports, two issues dear to the BronxWorks mission.
