Raised in the Bronx and now dedicating her career to serving her community, BronxWorks staff member Yinia Ramirez has been nominated for the Hispanic Coalition of New York’s #40Under40 #RisingStars award.  Currently Program Director of BronxWorks’ Navigator Health Insurance Assistance Program, Yinia has served BronxWorks in a wide range of capacities, exhibiting innovative leadership and commitment to collaboratively work with Bronx residents in need to build prosperous futures.

Yinia’s recent efforts at the helm of the Navigator program have yielded considerable success in expanding Bronx residents’ access to affordable health insurance. During the open enrollment period from November 15, 2014 to February 15, 2015, we enrolled a total of 1125 individuals in health insurance plans. Despite the end of the open enrollment period, in March the program surpassed its monthly goal, enrolling a total of 310 individuals into health insurance plans. Our Community Health Advocates program has informed and assisted a total of 450 individuals thus far with their health insurance needs – a figure we hope to maintain and expand upon.

The Navigator department also organized our highly successful first annual LGBTQ Health & Resources Fair, expanding our client base to include this oft-underserved community and kickstarting BronxWorks’ efforts to create new LGBTQ-centered programming. Navigator has several outreach events scheduled in the upcoming months to expand the program’s visibility in the community, specifically targeting small business owners in the borough.

Throughout her time at BronxWorks, Yinia has sustained deep engagement with the communities she serves, combining individual attentiveness and compassion with a broader systemic strategy for community outreach. As case manager and then job retention specialist for BronxWorks’ Workforce Development Department, Ms. Ramirez worked closely with hundreds of clients to ascertain strengths, develop professional goals, and devise career plans individually tailored to clients’ skills, challenges, interests, and values. Ms. Ramirez brought this holistic, case-focused style of leadership to her position as Director of the Strong Fathers, Strong Families program, helping over 300 struggling fathers gain and maintain employment, improve social relations with their families, and access relevant community resources.
