Many of our programs, particularly our services to the homeless, stress improving the health of our Bronx neighbors.  Thanks to a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, we now have a physician, a specialist in family medicine, on board to provide guidance and leadership in all our health-related programs and initiatives.

Meet BronxWorks medical director, Dr. Andrea Littleton, who is based at our Living Room/Safe Haven site with primary responsibility for our adult homeless programs.  Dr. Littleton, who has her own practice in the Bronx, is affiliated with a long-time BronxWorks partner, the Montefiore Medical Center, and her new relationship with us can be considered an outgrowth of our Hospitals to Home initiative in which the BronxWorks staff take over from hospital services to street homeless people and relieve the pressure on hospital emergency rooms.

Dr. Littleton is already busy at work, holding office hours here for walk-ins and other clients on Mondays from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, and on Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.  Every other Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM she works with our Homeless Outreach Team (HOT). She performs standard tests, including blood pressure readings and tests for diabetes, tuberculosis, hepatitis, and HIV/AIDS.  Dr. Littleton prescribes medications on the spot and advises staff as well as program participants on nutritional needs.

Among Dr. Littleton’s travels throughout the BronxWorks network are visits to patients in stabilization beds at the Stebbins Avenue facility, where they receive complete checkups as part of their care, as well as checking the streets with HOT staffers to locate homeless persons. Also to help the street homeless, Dr. Littleton will be in charge of a mobile testing unit we plan to organize.  For the elderly at our four senior centers, she is arranging individualized wellness programs, with particular concern for diagnosing and treating diabetes, hypertension, and depression.
