On June 20, 2013, the short film Bronxerella: A Fairy Tale premiered at the Bow Tie Cinemas American Theater in Parkchester.  It is the story of Cinderella and her family, exiled from their native country and living in the Bronx.  On her 50th wedding anniversary, Cinderella discovers if she really lives Happily Ever After.

Bronxerella was written and directed by Rubén Darío Cruz, who created the film with seniors at BronxWorks’ Morris Innovative Senior Center.  The film stars seniors from Morris, who worked alongside professional actors.  One scene also includes Bomba dancing by seniors at BronxWorks’ Heights Senior Center under the direction of Jose Ortiz.  Toward the end of the film, City Councilman Fernando Cabrera makes a cameo appearance.

Our new Morris celebrities got to walk the red carpet before seeing themselves on the big screen.  The short film will be shown at the city’s International Puerto Rican Film Festival this fall and will eventually be available for viewing online.

Cruz worked with the BronxWorks seniors through funding from the SPARC (Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide) program.  SPARC is a partnership of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department for the Aging, and local city arts councils.  In this case, support came from the Bronx Council on the Arts, a frequent partner of BronxWorks.
