Bedtime Stories, a collaboration between BronxWorks and New York Cares, pairs volunteers to read to children at the Jackson Avenue Family Residence in an effort to make books and reading a fun and enriching part of their lives.

In late June, Beth Lehmann and Tamara Lipshie, our Bedtime Stories volunteers, celebrated the end of the school year with the children. Participants decorated their own insulated water bottles and were presented with a stack of 7-8 books for summer reading.  The children also received a backpack filled with some toys, coloring books and pencils, bookmarks, and other treats.

One Bedtime Stories participant, Sharlene, was pleasantly surprised when an autographed book personalized to her from children’s author, Suzanne Selfors, arrived. Sharlene had been reading Selfors’ series “The Imaginary Veterinary.” Excited, Sharlene said it made her “life”!

Bedtime Stories takes a break during the summer, and the program will resume in the fall.
