Executive Director

Eileen Torres

Eileen Torres has been the Executive Director of BronxWorks since May 2014. As the leader of the agency, she serves as the ultimate advocate for the 60,000 residents of the Bronx that receive services from BronxWorks as well as the 900 employees across the organization. Eileen has been with BronxWorks since 1995, starting in administrative roles, serving as Admin Counsel and General Counsel, and stepping in as interim Executive Director/COO in 2013. Her education and background as an attorney have been invaluable in guiding BronxWorks in the highest standards of nonprofit governance and as an implementing partner for many New York City government programs.  
As the current Executive Director, Eileen has built upon the legacy of her predecessor, Carolyn McLaughlin, and expanded the scope, reach, and impact of services to the Bronx community. Under her direction, BronxWorks has added multiple new sites, formed many new public and private partnerships, and received outside recognition for its effective work including the 2013 New York Nonprofit Excellence Award.  
A graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School, Eileen earned a B.S. from Pace University, a J.D. from the Northeastern University School of Law, and is a member of the New York State Bar Association. She is a board member of the Lawyers Alliance for New York and serves on the Advisory Committee for the Center for Bronx Non-Profits. Eileen serves on the executive committee of Bronx Partners for Healthy Communities and is also a member of the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities CEO Council. She is also a member of the board of the Human Services Council.
Eileen is a Bronx native, having spent her formative years in northern Manhattan and the north central Bronx.

Scott Auwarter
Assistant Executive Director

Scott became BronxWorks’ Assistant Executive Director for Case Management Programs in 2002 after serving as a department director for seven years. He is an alumnus of the State University of New York at Cortland and has a Masters degree from the Hunter College School of Social Work. After graduating from college, he served for two years in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone. Scott first joined BronxWorks as a student intern in 1986 and has been a full-time staff member since 1988. His portfolio includes BronxWorks’ street homeless services, family shelters, HIV/AIDS services, and foster care prevention programs. Scott created our Homeless Outreach Team, oversaw BronxWorks’ foray into the homeless services arena, and is widely recognized as an expert on homelessness.  He oversaw BronxWorks' role in dramatically reducing street homelessness in the borough and has done innovative work in addressing the health needs of chronically homeless individuals.

Julie Belizaire-Spitzer
Homelessness Prevention Department Director

Julie started working for the Girls Club of New York in 1992 and transferred to BronxWorks before the two organizations merged in 1993.  She became the Department Director for Homelessness Prevention in 2005, and now supervises our access to benefits programs as well.  Julie is an expert in homelessness prevention and housing court procedures.  She holds a bachelors degree from SUNY-Albany and an MSW from Hunter College, and is a licensed social worker. 

Erica Coleman
General Counsel

Erica Coleman serves as General Counsel to BronxWorks and in that role oversees legal and compliance matters as well as human resources, employee education and training, information technology, and quality assurance. Prior to joining BronxWorks, Erica worked as Pro Bono Practice Attorney at Winston & Strawn LLP, where she exclusively represented nonprofits in corporate and transactional legal matters. Previously Erica practiced law in various private and nonprofit settings, including nearly five years as an associate in the Business, Financing & Restructuring Group at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, followed by 2.5 years as Director of Programs & Operations at Start Small Think Big, a Bronx-based nonprofit organization on a mission to further community economic development through pro bono legal services. Erica graduated cum laude from St. John’s University School of Law in 2008.

Noel Concepcion
Director of Adult Homeless Services Department

Noel joined BronxWorks in 1995 and has served as director of the Living Room homeless drop-in center since 2001. He also oversees BronxWorks’ Homeless Outreach Team and our stabilization bed program. Noel graduated from Southwestern College and has an MSW from the Hunter College School of Social Work. Along with five of his staff, he is certified in Homeless Mobile Crisis Intervention.

Ursula Cooper-Hunter
Children & Youth Department Director

Ursula joined BronxWorks in April 2020 as the Department Director of Children and Youth Programs. She has devoted her career to helping children and families for over two decades. Ursula has held leadership roles with various youth development organizations such as the Police Athletic League and, most recently, as a Program Manager with New York Edge. During her time at New York Edge, Ursula established partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local colleges, increasing resources to improve program quality. Ursula holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Bard College and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Baruch College.

Gianna Dell'Olio
Director of Advancement and Communications

Gianna Dell’Olio joined BronxWorks as the Director of Advancement and Communications in June 2015.  In this role, Gianna oversees all corporate and individual giving and stewardship, as well as special events and communications.  Gianna holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Arts from St. John’s University and is an alumna of the We Are the Bronx Fellowship.  Prior to BronxWorks, Gianna was the Director of Advancement at Preston High School and she also possesses an extensive background in sales, marketing, and corporate communications.  Gianna serves as an active member of many civic and community organizations.

Bibi S. Karim
Positive Living Department Director

Bibi joined BronxWorks in 1992 as a program specialist and has been the director of BronxWorks’ Positive Living Department, which provides services for people living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses, since 2004.  She also oversees our foster care prevention programs, which provide case management services to children and families in need.  Bibi has spent her entire professional life at BronxWorks.  She received her BA from Hunter College and is a licensed MSW with a degree from Fordham University.

Gordon Miller
Chief Financial Officer

Gordon joined BronxWorks as Chief Financial Officer in 2019.  He provides executive leadership over BronxWorks’ finances, including financial planning.  Gordon has an MBA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a bachelor's degree from Adelphi University.  He has years of professional experience in both the private and nonprofit sectors. Most recently, Gordon served as Director of Finance at the Jewish Child Care Association (JCCA), a child welfare and mental health services organization.

Amanda Pérez
Director of Quality and Compliance

Amanda became the BronxWorks Director of Quality and Compliance in 2018 after having served as a Program Director for two years.  She oversees all quality assurance, compliance, and risk management functions for BronxWorks at the organizational level, including outcomes reporting, data analysis, and tasks of the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee.  Prior to joining BronxWorks, Amanda served as the Director of Program Quality and Evaluation at New York City Mission Society, where she was responsible for overseeing all quality assurance and compliance functions at the programmatic level.  Under her leadership, New York City Mission Society was awarded a CEO Data Driven Provider Award in 2015.  Amanda holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia University and a Master’s Degree from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, and since 2016 has served as an Adjunct Lecturer teaching a graduate-level Program Development and Evaluation course in the Public Management Department at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Maria Rivera
Senior Services Department Director

Maria has been our Director of Senior Services since 2005. She began work at BronxWorks in 1999, serving as director at two of our senior centers. Prior to joining BronxWorks, she was director at the Older Adults Luncheon Club Senior Center, sponsored by Bronx Community College. Maria obtained her MSW from the Hunter College School of Social Work. She started the food pantry for community residents that operates out of our Morris Senior Center, helped transform Morris into one of the city's first Innovative Senior Centers, and helped create the Roberto Clemente Senior Services Office in River Park Towers.

Shali Sharma
Department Director, HomeBase and Home to Stay

Shali is the Director of our HomeBase and Home to Stay eviction prevention programs.  Previously she served as a social worker for the County of Fairfax, Virginia, and the director of Family Support Services for an agency in San Leandro, California.  Shali joined BronxWorks as the director of the HomeBase program in 2009 and became the department director in 2016.  She has a BA from the University of Tennessee and earned her MSW at the University of North Carolina.

Ken Small
Development Director

Ken has been Development Director since 1995, overseeing BronxWorks’ fundraising activities, communications, and special events. He has a BA in Economics from Fordham University and an MA in Economics from Long Island University. Prior to joining BronxWorks, he was a researcher and economist with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics and then the Director of Planning and Evaluation with the National Urban League. Since joining BronxWorks, foundation support has increased from $400,000 to over $2.2 million. Through his efforts, we have received coverage in a variety of media.

Betty Ann Tamaisar
Department Director, Workforce Development

Betty is the Department Director of Workforce Development at BronxWorks, overseeing programs totaling $2.2 million in funding and serving over 2,000 clients annually.  She obtained her B.A. in Political Science from New Jersey City University and an M.A. in Human Rights Studies at Columbia University.  Throughout her career, Betty has served as an Americorp VISTA for The NYC Coalition Against Hunger and as a Community Revitalization Associate and Relationship Manager for the East River Development Alliance (ERDA). In 2010, she was hired by BronxWorks to serve as Operation Coordinator for the company’s Workforce Development Department.  After two years, the agency named her Program Coordinator of their Healthy Families and Housing Assistance Programs, and then as Director of their Navigator program.  In the summer of 2014, she was asked to return to the workforce location as the Assistant Department Director and in 2017 was promoted to Department Director.

John Weed
Assistant Executive Director

John joined BronxWorks in 1990, becoming a department director in 1995 and serving as Assistant Executive Director for Community Programs since 2002. His duties include oversight of programs that serve immigrants, families, and senior citizens. John created BronxWorks’ Early Childhood Learning Centers, our Avenue St. John walk-in office, several entitlements programs, and our Heights Community Farmers Market. John has worked at the Latin America Women’s Network, the NYC Commission on Human Rights, and the Peace Corps, serving in the Dominican Republic. He graduated from the University of New Mexico and holds an LMSW from the Hunter College School of Social Work.
