Stephanie Wingert, Program Director Jill Chaifetz Transfer High School

Stephanie Wingert began working at BronxWorks three years ago, when she was hired as Assistant Program Director at the Jill Chaifetz Transfter School (JCTS). Recently promoted to Program Director at JCTS, Stephanie enjoys working directly with program participants whom she described as "resilient and inspiring."

In addition to helping students address academic and personal issues, Stephanie and her staff assist the students in developing job-readiness skills, such as resume writing. JCTS students complete internships and have the opportunity to attend college tours and visit trade schools. There are approximately 200 students at JCTS, which accepts applicants on a rolling basis.

An essential part of Stephanie's role as at JCTS is developing a sense of trust with the students, which is often the first step towards helping them succeed. Although she does not teach in a traditional classroom setting, many of Stephanie's students refer to her as their teacher. One student recently expressed his gratitude for the support she provided to him and his family a few years ago.

"The students really take in and appreciate all that we do for them," Stephanie said.

Stephanie has always been interested in working with adolescents. After obtaining a bachelor's from Emory University in Georgie, Stephanie received a Master's Degree in Social Work from Columbia University. Her first job in the field was at a non-profit and wildlife center called Green Chimneys in Brewster, New York. At Green Chimneys, Stephanie had the opportunity to work with children in a non-traditional educational environment, which became a career focus and passion for her.

After moving to New York City, Stephanie began working with children with physical disabilities, also in an alternative educational setting. In her various roles, Stephanie has always enjoyed providing guidance to children in unconventional and progressive environments, which cultivate creativity in both the instructors and students. Working at JCTS was a natural fit for Stephanie.

Born and raised in Southern Louisiana, Stephanie currently lives in Harlem with husband, daughter, dog and cat. She is grateful for her role at BronxWorks and the Agency's commitment to serving the diverse needs of the Bronx community. Stephanie is also inspired by the dedication of her team at JCTS.

"My colleagues care about their role and it is exciting to work with so many committed, like-minded individuals," Stephanie said.
